Making Sure Your Baby’s Toys Are Clean and Germ-Free

Making Sure Your Baby’s Toys Are Clean and Germ-Free

Some exposure to nasties is good for babies but it needs to the right kind of nasty. Certain molds for example can cause long term respiratory issues, amongst other things.

Keeping your child's toys clean and germ free, is an important area to focus on. Babies’ immune systems are still developing, so it’s important to help them to stay healthy. From crawling around on the floor, touching everything they can and discovering the inside of their mouth, your baby can pick up germs and illnesses very easily.  They may have a favorite teething toy or a cuddly teddy bear, but it could be a hotbed for germs. Washing your babies’ toys regularly will help to significantly reduce their chance of becoming sick.

Baby safe cleaning

Make sure you always check a toy’s washing instructions first, as some may not be water-proof or require washing in a particular way. Bath toys should be cleaned right after bath time, as any moisture left on or in them can easily cause bacteria and mould to develop. Also, always avoid using products like bleach, surface cleaners or strong disinfectants when cleaning your children’s toys. Instead mix one cup of water with distilled white vinegar, or mix water with lemon juice. Add in a few drops of tea tree oil which contains natural antiseptic and put in a clean spray bottle so you have a quick cleaner you can grab when you need to.

Fabric toys

You can mostly wash modern fabric toys in the machine on a gentle cycle. Put the toys in a string bag or pillow case and wash on a gentle cycle, preferably in cold water, in case the fabric isn’t colour fast or there are any glued-on parts. Use an eco-friendly detergent designed for delicates, or use half a cup of bicarb of soda instead. For any soft toys that cannot go in the washing machine, you can sponge the down with a damp cloth with a mix of vinegar and bicarb of soda. Make sure the toy is completely dry before giving it back to your baby. Even a toy that’s just a little damp, could quickly develop mould and mildew.

Amber teething jewelry

It's particularly important to clean amber jewelry for children, as dirt, dust and germs can form on it. It's easy to clean amber, but make sure you avoid using any harsh detergents or cleaning agents. Get a bowl of lukewarm water and dip a cloth into the water, wring it out so it's only a little damp and gentle wipe the cloth over the amber. Dry each amber bead individually, to avoid them developing a cloudy appearance.

Silicon teething toys

Try to have more than two teething toys, for your baby to use in turn. After use, wash with warm soapy water, rinse then thoroughly dry. You should check the toy for any damage before and after your baby uses their teething. If there's any damage, then throw it away immediately.

The great thing about the Bambeado range is that there are no cracks or joins in our products for mold to grow - it is a real source of comfort for many parents.

Your peace of mind

It’s so important for your child’s health and for your peace of mind to regularly and thoroughly clean their toys. Babies are curious and love exploring, picking things up and putting them in their mouths. But think about the toys that you encourage them to put in their mouths like their teethers. These need close attention and if you are ever in any doubt, replace it. Don’t let sickness bugs spoil your baby’s playtime.
